Application

Solavis SuperShield can be used to treat vibration bourne noise in many different applications including car audio installations by being treated to car panels including door, boot, roof and rear panels. It can also be used on any other types of vehicles, buses, rail cars, ships, planes and so on. SuperShield can sound deaden and provide acoustic insulation to ventilation ducts and other HVAC equipment, industrial plant, computers, home appliances and many other objects.

How SuperShield works

Traditional noise insulation mats are inefficient mass loaders which work by adding weight (or mass) to the problem panels to quiet them down. This technology is typically cheaper, but not nearly as effective or durable. These materials are often bitumen based, are excessively heavy and odor producing at higher temperatures.

SuperShield, being a constraint layer viscoelastic damper, converts panel vibration energy into low level heat. This allows for much lower application weights of SuperShield compared to bitumen products for the same effect. Further, our butyl based damper has been specially designed to be exceptionally durable. The butyl rubber will not rust, degrade, age or lose adhesion or go brittle in time, even under very large temperature extremes.

Installation

Solavis SuperShield easily fuses to sheet metal and other hard substrates. The application of SuperShield will add bulk to your car panel and strengthen it. Simply cut to size, peel the release liner and stick SuperShield to the interior sheet metal of your car.

Press the mat firmly into place. The use of a roller is recommended for larger pieces. Start from the center and work your way out, making sure to seal any air gaps – which reduce the effectiveness of your installation. If you notice air gaps at the end, simply cut a small hole over the air pocket and push on the material to allow the air to escape.

Car Audio

Often in vehicle audio systems large amounts of music energy is converted into mechanical energy by the vibration and flexing of your vehicle panels. These vibrations consume the sound energy produced by your audio system and in turn replace them with an irritating panel resonance as the panel vibrates freely.

The application of SuperShield will help by minimising vibrations in your vehicle panels. Less vibrations equates to less stereo noise lost unwanted noise and also a more stable environment for your speakers to perform in.

SuperShield will also help to keep your stereo acoustical energy from leaving the inside of your vehicle, and reduce unwanted ambient noise energy (such as road noise, outside noise, engine noise etc.) from entering in. Ultimately this means that the perceived maximum volume of your stereo is increased as your stereo has to ‘fight’ against less unwanted noise energy.

Thermal Insulation

The foil surface on SuperShield acts as a radiant barrier, reflecting up to 97% of radiant heat back towards its source. In vehicles, the majority of heat issues are attributed to direct exposure to the sun and the engine; both radiant forms of heat transfer. Blocking this radiant heat from entering the vehicle cabin will result is much cooler temperatures.

Further, the butyl layer slows down conductive heat flow and acts as a ‘thermal break’ between the metal panels and any interior trims / fittings directly in contact with them.
